Dog given just minutes to live after she was hit by a car is saved by a vet who performed a blood transfusion from her own pet
A dog which was just minutes away from death had her life saved when a kind-hearted vet volunteered to perform an emergency blood transfusion from her own pet.
Nellie, a Spanish Podenco, was hit by a car and suffered catastrophic blood loss, so owners Mark and Jane Robinson rushed her to Vine Tree Vets in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
Vet Amy Howard did not have time to send for a transfusion from the animal blood bank, so used her own pet dog Dylan to donate the blood that saved Nellie's life.
Lucky: Nellie was nearly put down as a puppy in Spain before the Robinsons rescued her

Now the one-year-old rescue dog has made a full recovery - and become friends with the heroic lurcher who helped save her.
Miss Howard, 24, said: 'We realised that Nellie was in desperate need of a blood transfusion, so of the vets that were there I said I could bring my dog in from home.
'I had concerns that Dylan wouldn't be happy with the transfusions, but he was absolutely fine with it - he did himself proud helping out Nellie like that.
'Without the blood, Nellie would have died, as we could not stop the bleeding at the time. In my experience I have never seen a dog fight as much as she did.'
Nellie was on a walk with Mr Robinson, 57, Mrs Robinson, 53, and their 14-year-old daughter Martha when a speeding car struck her and left her for dead.
Heroic: Miss Howard volunteered her own pet because there was no time for a transfusion from the blood bank
Nellie!

Mr Robinson said: 'Nellie had suffered massive blood loss when we brought her in to the vets, so Amy had to go home to get her own dog to use for the transfusion.
'After Nellie had been stabilised with the additional blood, the vets operated on her in an attempt to stop the internal bleeding.
'At the time Nellie was out on a walk and had got close to the road. Suddenly we heard the car and Nellie's screams, but no brakes and the car drove off.
'It was only was the vets operated that we realised her liver had been badly damaged and so had to be partially removed.
Desperate: Nellie was just minutes from death after she was hit by a speeding car while out for a walk

Rescue: Vet Amy Howard, left, took blood from her own dog Dylan to save the life of Nellie, right with owners Jane and Mark Robinson

'The vets then had to get a second blood transfusion from the UK Pet Blood Bank for a donation of the same type, before they operated on her again.
Procedure: Nellie had multiple stitches put in after her emergency surgery
'Despite managing to cauterise the small liver blood veins, the vets didn't expect her to live through the night.
'She has somehow managed to make a miraculous recovery though.'
Nellie previously had a brush with death when Spanish authorities threatened to put her down because the country has an epidemic of stray dogs
'I think Nellie could definitely be Britain's luckiest dog after everything she has been through,' Mr Robinson added.
'As well as this hit and run, as a puppy she was destined to be put down since they have too many stray dogs in Spain.
'It was only after she was brought back to the UK and we adopted her that she was saved from her fate.
'Now after this latest tragic accident Nellie has proven that she really is a miracle dog.'
